Medowie's second supermarket was earmarked to be open before the end of 2012, but a Woolworths spokeswoman told the Examiner delays in construction had pushed back the anticipated opening date. While the spokeswoman could not delve into the specific reasons for the delays, Cr Geoff Dingle said they could be linked to the site's developer, the Buildev Group. Buildev came under pressure in recent months amid speculation about mining magnate Nathan Tinkler's business empire. He is the group's major shareholder and joint director.
This was followed by the sudden resignation of director and group general manager Andrew Dowling. Cr Dingle said he had not seen any activity on the Woolworths site, on the corner of Ferodale and Peppertree roads, "for several months" and was concerned Bolkm, the construction company responsible for the build on behalf of the developer Buildev, was having problems sourcing contractors due to financial concerns related to Mr Tinkler.
He said the community deserved an explanation in relation to the construction delays and also the proposed roundabout to be installed at the intersection. Residents did not want to look at an untidy development site.
Buildev was unable to respond to the Examiner's calls in time for publication.
The Woolworths spokeswoman said despite the delays the company was still "very keen" to be operating out of the new premises.
"Medowie Woolworths is still coming to the Medowie community . . . there are no plans of pulling out."
