Hosted by the Junction Inn Fishing Club and sponsored by H & D Mitre 10, the fishing classic is open to anglers of all ages to test their skill and help raise money for charity.
"This is our ninth year we have run the event," Junction Inn Fishing Club secretary Gerard Cunningham said.
"Last year we raised donations of $2700 to Westpac Rescue Helicopter, $600 to melanoma research and fish restocking in the local dams.
"Over the [past] eight years we have donated to Westpac alone over $12,500."
Cunningham said the fishing classic got bigger and better each year, with 150 to 200 people taking part.
He said the club hoped to raise $3000 for the helicopter service this year, which could only be done if more people signed up to take part.
Competitors can fish from 7pm, March 28, when registrations close, until the 3pm weigh in on Sunday, March 30, at the Junction Inn Hotel, Raymond Terrace.
Cunningham said competitors could launch from any boat ramp, but could only fish from the junction of the Hunter and Paterson rivers, near Morpeth, down to the end of the Stockton and Newcastle break walls.
Registrations can be made at H&D Mitre 10 Heatherbrae, Tackle Power at Sandgate and the Junction Inn Hotel and bottle shop, in Raymond Terrace.
The cost is $25 for an adult and $10 for children aged 16 and under.
Bag limits are outlined on registration forms. If any undersized fish are presented to the weigh in, the competitor will be disqualified.
Prize winners must be present at the weigh in, which includes a free sausage sizzle.
