A VISITING Japanese vice-consul from Sydney was treated to a cultural performance in song and dance at St Philip's Christian College on Tuesday.
Vice-consul Tomoko Hashizume, accompanied by Jennifer Schroeder from the NSW Education Department's cultural division, was clearly impressed with the morning's display.
The Salamander Bay college's head of Japanese language, Stephen Grant, said that the visit coincided with Girls Day in Japan.
"Our two guests were welcomed in Japanese by two year 6 students, which was followed by the Japanese national anthem sung by all of Middle School," Mr Grant said.
"We then had a collection of students from years 4, 5 and 6 performing some martial arts demonstrations.
"After the morning assembly, the guests presented a talk to year 7 Japanese language students, while elective students were given a more personalised lesson."
The students performed a kata (choreography sequence) and applied their skills with the katana and sai swords.
