Le Mottee voices merger concern to Nationals

Councillor Paul Le Mottee has taken the fight against the proposed council merger to Tuncurry this week in a bid to voice his opposition to anyone who will listen.

Cr Le Mottee attended a business breakfast on Monday to address Nationals MPs Stephen Bromhead and John Barilaro.

“The minister for Local Government [Paul Toole] is a Nationals member so it was important for me to spread the word to his colleagues,” Cr Le Mottee said.

“There was also a staffer of Paul Toole’s in attendance and I made sure to pass on my thoughts to her as well. There were two points that really gained traction with her - the first was that virtually no one in Port Stephens supported the concept at all.

“The second was that the local government area of Port Stephens virtually mirrors that of the state electorate and is wholly contained within the federal seat of Paterson.

“Under this proposal there would be three state members and three federal members representing the LGA, can you imagine the difficulty in gaining funding for the area?”
