A total of $20,000 from the 2016 Mayoral Academic Scholarships Program was presented to the students on Monday, February 22.
Recipients under this year's program are studying in a range of fields including criminal justice, law, nursing, teaching and journalism.
Mayor Bruce MacKenzie said the program had highlighted the amazing things people in Port Stephens set out to achieve since it was introduced seven years ago, and this year was no exception.
“The kinds of careers that our young people want to head into and the aspirations they have are so diverse, but what they all have in common is that they want to make a positive contribution not only to their local community but the wider world,” he said.
“Every year we receive countless applications and every single one would be a worthy recipient of these scholarships, and a worthy ambassador for Port Stephens.
“We're very fortunate here in Port Stephens that the future is in good hands.”
Cr MacKenzie said particular recognition should be paid to the businesses that made the scholarships program possible.
Representatives from this year's sponsors, including Wethertex, Mackas Sand and Soil Supplies, McDonald Jones Homes, the Wests Group, Hunter Land, Newcastle Airport, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club and Salamander Bay Recycling, joined Port Stephens Mayor Bruce Mackenzie to present the scholarships on Monday.
“We all know that education isn't cheap, and this is not only a wonderful contribution to individuals as they take the first step on the path to achieving their dreams, but an investment in the next generation of community leaders in Port Stephens,” he said.
