While RAAF Base contamination fears shut down commercial fishing in the river last year, the Junction Inn Fishing Club has decided to proceed with its annual fishing competition.
“We’re not too worried,” fishing club president Peter Hughes said. “We trust in the authorities. If there were concerns about the levels outside the cove, they’d close fishing in the river.”
This year’s competition will be held March 18 to 20. Hughes hoped to see up to 250 anglers. The competition is open to men, women, children (aged 12 to 16) and nippers (aged 11 and under).
“It’s a good family fishing opportunity,” Hughes said. “And, there’s plenty of prizes this year.”
Fishing can be done on or off shore, so long as it was within the fishing zone. This is to the end of the two breakwalls in Newcastle Harbour, the Seaham Weir and the junction of the Hunter and Paterson rivers. Fishing is closed in Fullerton Cove due to the contamination.
Money raised from this year’s competition will go to Port Stephens Marine Rescue and a program to restock bass in lakes and dams.
Registration forms are available from H&D Mitre 10 in Heatherbrae. Forms must be in by 7pm on March 18. The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for all children. For more information email peter.hughes59@me.com or call 0417 210 408.
