The Examiner fishing columnist has partnered with Nelson Bay artist Ileana Clarke (no relation) to tell the story of an unlikely hero – his 11 foot, 9 horsepower tinny, ‘Stinkpot’.
The story is titled, Unwanted. So named because he bought it from a Newcastle man who had won it in a raffle but wanted it gone.
“It’s all about this boat that was unwanted and our adventures,” John said.
“It didn't take long for me to discover that Stinkpot was a ‘take anywhere’ boat.
“Solid in structure the brave little tinny sat comfortably in a rolling sea and was not bullied by any forces of nature.”
John is a prolific writer. He’s scribed five books on fishing and the ocean already but this is his first for children.
“It’s important to me that children can learn some of our history and have an affinity with it,” he said.
“I was a school teacher and I’ve always had good communication with kids.”
Ileana Clarke delivers adult art classes in Nelson Bay. She didn’t need much convincing when “Stinker” approached her.
“I love the stories because they are so real,” she said.
“I had a good read through the story and got to know Stinkpot.”
The book is illustrated in pencil and water colour.
“She’s given great expression and life to this aluminium boat,” John said.
“Just a little stroke of the pencil can change the whole mood.”
The book will be available in mid November through selected outlets throughout Newcastle and Port Stephens or at www.stinker.com.au.
