For artists at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre, they have been exploring what this time of year means to them through their artwork, for the latest exhibition ‘Summertime’.
“We really want to tune into the subject of summer that everyone in the area is here to celebrate,” said Cory Acorn, director of the gallery.
Oil and acrylic paintings feature predominantly in the exhibition, with some artists experimenting with different styles for the first time.
“One of our artists, for example, who normally works with acrylic has experimented with resin for this exhibition, and the result has been fantastic,” Ms Acorn said.
The calibre of artwork is unlike any other regional gallery, Ms Acorn said.
“It is an amazing community of artists here, from world class painters, right down to beginners.
“It’s wonderful to see people who have been painting all their lives sharing their knowledge with beginners,” Ms Acorn said.
Oil painter Christina Mawkes, who has been coming to the art centre for roughly 20 years, says the exhibition themes, which change every six weeks, keeps the artists motivated.
“It helps us to keep things fresh as artists, and as a gallery in general,” Ms Mawkes said.
“It’s been great coming here all these years, it’s such a wonderful community. We all learn something new from each other, and help push each other artistically,” she said.
The exhibition, which features works by 23 artists from the art centre, is on until January 25.
