The fragmentation of the Mambo Wanda Wetlands was of particular concern to Ms Walker.
The Department of Education last year divested itself of a six hectare site that overlaps the wetlands – a decision the government would later admit was a mistake.
“I have a keen interest in preservation of koala habitat and koala corridors and this worries me,” Ms Walker said.
“I’m back in Sydney this week and I will be making some inquiries about what is happening.
“There’s considerable community interest in the Mambo Wanda Wetlands and concerns over what’s going to happen with that site are quite high.”
Ms Walker also spent time talking with residents with the Shoal Bay Community Association.
The association shared its vision to preserve the headland once the group home closes. The hope is to make use of the existing infrastructure and maintain the site as a community asset.
“It would be terrific to see that area managed under a trust,” Ms Walker said.
“They are taking some very positive steps toward the future preservation of the site. Anything that gives the residents a voice in the future is a very good thing.”
