Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters were called to Kinross Street, Raymond Terrace about 1pm on Saturday following reports of a garage fire.
On arrival, firefighters found that the fire had spread to the adjoining brick and tile house on the property.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
By 1.27pm the garage and house were well alight, a FRNSW media spokeswoman said.
Occupants from houses either side of the property that was ablaze were evacuated.
The spokeswoman said the fire was brought under control by 3pm despite firefighters being unable to get to the source in the garage.
By 3.30pm, the garage structure had collapsed.
The fire was extinguished by 4.17pm.
Nine FRNSW crews – from Raymond Terrace, Tarro, Salamander Bay, Mayfield West, East Maitland and Minmi – attended.
