The 2017 tournament hosted schools from all over the state, and acted as a selection process for the NSW team in the national event.
Kenny’s silver in the javelin events was more than enough to book his place to the Australian All-Schools competition, an honour that the young Tomaree hopeful is now looking forward to.
“I’ve never competed at a national level before so I am really excited to be able to compete for NSW,” Kenny said. “It’s against the best athletes from all over Australia.”
“When my NSW uniform arrived I felt really proud to be able to represent my state.”
Kenny knows that he has the ability in his locker to prove himself on the national level, and is eager to show them off with other top level athletes.
“I hope I will achieve my best results at national, and finish towards the top of the field,” he said.
In the end, Kenny’s performance at the NSW All-Schools competition earned him second place in the 14 Years event, behind Trinity Grammar’s Joshua Yeoh.
Kenny’s final result of 47.42 metres (43.30, 44.37, 47.42, 46.27) was enough to beat out third placed Harrison Lucas from Barker College, and impressed the selectors on the day.
Yeoh’s 47.99 metres (Foul throw, 44.86, 47.99, 43.50) was the best on the day.
Alongside Kenny were three more Tomaree High participants, who all placed strongly throughout the day.
Ben Esquilant just missed a place in the 100m and 200m events, eventually finishing with a 4th place record, while Jacy Carter ran 10th in the 200m.
Cooper Luff participated in three events, placing 8th in long jump, 4th in the 400m event and claiming a bronze medal finish in high jump.
Now Kenny turns his focus to the Australian All-Schools Championships in Adelaide, to be hosted from December 8 to December 10.
The event is a convergence of the best up-and-coming talent for track and field, all gunning for the coveted title of national champion.
The three-day championships will be hosted at the South Australia Athletics Stadium in Adelaide.
