For the past 13 years the group has wrapped Christmas gifts for a donation in the shopping centre.
Pastor Bill Brill said volunteers wrapped up to 6000 gifts last year, and raised about $9000. Money raised is forwarded to the Bethel Children’s Homes in Sri Lanka.
“I think it has become part of the Christmas culture in the community,” Pastor Brill said.
“It’s a great way to connect with people in the community and for us to continue our long-term relationship with the children in some of the poorest parts of Sri Lanka.”
Money raised from the gift wrapping station has been used to house, feed and educate children in the homes. Now money is used to provide vocational training for children.
About 40 volunteers have put their hand up to help with gift wrapping this year. Not all volunteers are from the Taylors Beach church, but members of the community who enjoy wrapping presents.
Pastor Brill said wrapping gifts provided special moments. People talked about the people they were purchasing gifts for, donated large sums for some of the smallest gifts wrapped and volunteers even comfort those who are doing it emotionally tough.
Volunteers will offer gift wrapping services in Salamander Bay Square six days a week (not Sunday) between 10am and 4pm until Christmas Eve, December 24.
