The Panthers have appointed two new coaches – versatile forward Jye Richardson and successful junior coach Greg Hodson. Training is underway on Wednesday nights at 6pm.
The club has retained the services of key players Daniel Halliday and Connor Neill. Shane Maher has retired. The 2017 player of the year, Hayden Thompson, returns to rugby but with Merewether Calton in the hope to reignite his rep career.
In mid-March all clubs will play four preseason games. Mallabula’s committee will have Brad Fogarty at the helm, Brian Thompson (vice president), Emma Thompson (treasurer) and Jacinta Boiden (secretary).
Nelson Bay Cricket Club had its two A-grade teams go head-to-head at Salmander Sports Complex last Saturday. In a close contest the Makos, 5-125, defeated the Turtles, all out 121. All rounder Nic Griffith was the man of the match with the impressive figures of 4-16 and a solid knock off 44 n.o.
Christian Hernandez was clinical with his 38 runs and Myles Eckersley took 3-27 for the Turtles.
Dave McDonnell starred with the bat, 46 runs, Tyler Ostle 22 runs and Matt Palmer 2-33. The young guns had a good win over Mavericks 143 to 124.
Fingal Beach Surf Club hosted its annual masters surf carnival on Saturday with a large roll up of competitors from Sydney, Central Coast and Newcastle branches making the trip north.
The overall point score was won by the Terrigal club. Fingal and Nobbys came in second and third. Strong performances for the locals came from Marguarite White and Tanya Squires who excelled in the diamond lady and board events.
Wayne Freeman won the beach sprint and anchored the Fingal relay medal team. Clint Brown won the swim and ski events while Rod Nyman was impressive in his event.
The junior club host the branch championships in two weeks. They will hold a nippers surf camp this weekend to prepare for the carnival.
