The social club began its twice monthly meetings in January, coming after a big finish to 2017 where the best shots taken that year were displayed at the annual photography exhibition at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.
Photos taken throughout the year that won the club’s photo categories of colour print, black and white, creative and macro/close up – judged each month – were displayed on the “wall of fame” at the exhibition.
The 2017 wall of fame shots were judged by internationally renowned photographer Jacqui Dean.
“For the last two years we have had renown photographers come to the Bay to judge our end of year competition, which encompasses all winning images throughout the year,” Vikki Ferrier from the club said.
“Jacqui was very impressed with the clubs standard of photography and picked her favourites in all four categories plus an overall wining image.
“We also have a members’ choice overall winner, which is voted by the current club members.
“While we are not a competitive club this is just a bit of recognition and something to strive for throughout the year.”
Winners for 2017 included Bill Behan for best colour print and creative with his photo of a surfer riding a wave in Surfest and Ron Watton in macro/close up for his image of wasps titled Munch Time. Watton also claimed the black and white category.
Ferrier’s image of a Japanese garden titled Autumn Colors was Dean’s pick. The members choice award was also won by Ferrier for her image of boats titled Peace and Quiet.
Tomaree Peninsula Photography Club made up with people with a love of photography.
Each month has a theme and club members are encouraged to enter images in the four categories, but following the monthly theme.
“Themes are a challenge to members,” Behan said. “You have to go out and find a suitable subject to meet the theme criteria and then interpret the subject in a manner which meets the categories.”
The club meets at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on the second and fourth Tuesday each month from 7pm.
The mid-month meeting is designed to teach, impart knowledge and assist members with photographic skills while the end of month meeting is a designated competition night where images are submitted for peer review.
