But when a gold Mazda that officers saw on Heaney Lane at 1.30am failed to stop for police, a pursuit began that went through Redhead, Belmont, Marks Point, Blacksmiths and Swansea.
Police allege the vehicle was travelling as fast as 140km/h on the Pacific Highway.
The chase ended when the driver of the Mazda, which had allegedly been stolen, crashed into a road barrier. The driver, 18, and passenger, 22, were arrested. The passenger was released without charge and the driver was taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard.
Investigations continue.
