Officers from Port Stephens/Hunter Police District were notified by small business owners in Lemon Tree Passage and Salamander Bay regarding the use of counterfeit notes.
An investigation was commenced and about 9am on Monday a 41-year-old man attended Nelson Bay Police Station where he was charged with dishonestly obtain financial advantage etc by deception and breach of bail.
He was refused bail and will appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday.
How to spot counterfeit currency
Key features distinguishing real and fake currency include a slightly thicker feel, the ability to tear counterfeit notes and slightly fuzzier images.
Often counterfeit notes will be printed on paper or a type of lower grade plastic.
All genuine banknotes are printed on a special form of plastic.
