A section of Grahamstown Road – spanning 500 metres from the Richardson Road intersection to Grahamstown Aquatic Centre (see map below) – was closed to traffic in both directions on Tuesday (February 20).
Vehicles, including buses, will not be able to access this section of the road for about five weeks.
The cycleway along Grahamstown Dam has also been closed to bikes and foot traffic. It is expected to remain closed for six weeks.
“Hunter Water appreciates that the road closure will cause some disruption and we thank you for your patience,” Hunter Water stated on its website about the project.
Hunter Valley Buses has listed changes to its school and public transport services on its website.
The company said there would be slight timing and route changes to its school service. A detailed bus timetable for the construction period can be found here.
Public timetabled services for bus routes 136 and 137 will be maintained with a shuttle service.
“We have created a weekday 30 minute frequency shuttle services to maintain timetabled services during the road works,” Hunter Valley Buses stated on its website.
There will be slight changes to Hunter Valley Buses’ weekend timetable. For more information on the public timetable, click here.
The disruptions come as part of Hunter Water’s Campvale Culvert Renewal project.
The Campvale Culvert was constructed in the 1960’s to transfer stormwater from the Campvale Canal into Grahamstown Dam.
The culvert is now approaching the “end of its functional life” and needs to be replaced.
“Hunter Water is undertaking a project to decommission the existing culvert and construct new assets to maintain functionality,” the company explained on the project information page on its website.
“Two new pipelines will be constructed from Campvale pump station to Grahamstown Dam which will replace the existing culvert.
“The driver for this project is to ensure the ongoing safety of the dam. This project is not part of any potential future plan related to changing the volume of water pumped from Campvale Canal into Grahamstown Dam or addressing any concern about water quality in Campvale Canal.”
New pipelines are being installed across Grahamstown Road, which is constructed on the dam wall.
Hunter Water said the road and cycleway closure was necessary to maintain the dam wall’s watertight seal.
