Hosts for the first code clash with Nelson Bay Rugby Club’s senior team, the Bomboras defeated the Gropers 20-12.
Insurance issues plagued the charity game, with proceeds raised going to Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network. A lack of insurer willing to cover the event, which was meant to be a one half league and one half union game, threatened it from going ahead.
An insurer was found with less than a week to go, however the format had to be changed to a full league game. For some of the Gropers, it was their first league game.
On its Facebook page, Nelson Bay Rugby Club congratulated its players who did “exceptionally well” on the field, especially those who made their league code debut.
“Both teams played in the spirit of the day and put on a fantastic game before a massive crowd at Fingal Oval,” the Gropers posted to Facebook.
Before the Bomboras and Gropers played their game on Saturday afternoon, the two club’s women’s teams played a game of league tag.
It was the Bomboras ladies tag team’s first game. The Gropers ladies won the game.
The Gropers will host the Port Stephens Charity Shield game next year.
