The Panthers are at home and will play West Wallsend in their annual Changa Cup clash. The club has retained the bulk of last year’s playing group with Kobi Martyn set to play his 100th game.
Also on board is 2017 player of the year Hayden Thompson plus Stewart King. Up front, the experienced front row Ben Mossop and Leigh Kelly will get the hard yards.
The day will also see and an under-15 trial match followed by the Mallabulla ladies tag team with coach Derek Coxon to trial several different combinations.
At Fingal Oval the Bomboras will start their challenge cup game against the Kotara Bears on Saturday. The action starts at 2pm with the Fingal ladies to play the Raymond Terrace Ravens.
Two teens from Nelson Bay Rugby Union Club head off on a trip of a lifetime when they travel to Italy for the NSW country development tour.
Second rower Luke Price and halfback Joshua Mann, who both played in NSW Country Championships last year, joined the tour after an open invitation by Country Rugby Union for country players to join the trip.
The tour will see the group play four games over the two week trip and will give them a wonderful experience taking in the beaut scenery of Rome, Florence and Pisa.
The boys’ father’s Joel Price and Stewart Mann have the tough job of chaperoning the group on the road trip.
Nelson Bay Cricket Club had a good weekend with two of their three teams advancing to become minor premiers.
The B2 team ran down Warners Bay to move straight to the grand-final. Best with the bat were Ross Turnbull, 33, and Mark Fahndrich, 26.
The main destroyer for the Bay was right arm opening bowler Matt James with the excellent figures 5/24. Alex Ward captured 3-18.
The A-grade Makos play their final this Saturday against Merewether. The two teams faced each other in the grand-final last season. The winner of Saturday’s game will move onto the grand-final.
The Makos’ win last weekend was a great team effort. Wayne Banks scored 45, Hamish Bartlett 34 and Darren Mottram 26n.o.
The bowlers shared the honours. Simon Plummer 3-28, Nick Griffith 3-40 and Myles Eckersley 2-15.
The young guns bowed out with a very narrow loss to the Hamilton North club.
