The Black Diamond Cup side suffered at the hands of the reigning premiers Terrigal Avoca, going down 22.11 (143) to (4.3.27), as did reserves, 1.1 (7) to 28.23 (191).
However, the Bay’s women turned the tables and delivered a resounding defeat to the visiting Terrigal side 20.15 (135) to 0.4 (4).
Jayden Rymer was a standout for the senior Marlins side with Adam Grinyer, Billy Barton and Chris Eddy also key playmakers on the day.
Molly Simpson, Emmalee Harris, Jemma Astley and Sophie Balcombe were the best for Nelson Bay with Kaitlynn Douglass and Simpson the leading goalkickers with four each.
Next week the Marlins are on the road to the Central Coast where they take on Killarney Vale.
In their first Black Diamond AFL game, Port Stephens Power were defeated by reigning premiers Newcastle City 0.1 (1) to 27.26 (188).
Power face Wallsend - West Newcastle at Ferodale Park on Saturday.

Nelson Bay came out of the gate strong for the 2018 season, with the Gropers’ premier 1 and 2 teams each defeating University of Newcastle on Saturday.
Playing away at Bernie Curran Oval, the Bay’s premier 1 side defeated the home team 24-3 while premier 2 were able to hang on to a 22-19 lead to win the game.
The Bay under-19 side, playing in Wickham, were defeated by a strong Hamilton Hawks contingent 46-5.
Meanwhile, Medowie and Districts, playing in premier 3, went down 22-12 to University.
Nelson Bay Premier 1 is at home – Bill Strong Oval, on Saturday. They face Lake Macquarie at 3pm.
Premier 2, also at home, face Lake Macquarie at 1.40pm and under-19s have the bye.
Medowie face Lake Macquarie at home – Boyd Oval – at 6pm on Friday, April 13.
Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League
NHRL teams are mid-way though trials that will determine which grade they play in for the 2018 season.
Fingal Bay faced Cardiff on Saturday, going down by two points.
Mallabula versed Kearsley, Raymond Terrace (A) v Kotara, Raymond Terrace (B) v Wallsend and Karuah v East Maitland.
In the Ladies League Tag, Fingal Bay played Aberglasslyn and Mallabula v Dora Creek.
A draw has not yet been released for the NHRL season.
