The council’s park and ride service between Broadmeadow and Newcastle will run free on Anzac Day for the Nobbys dawn service, the council announced on Friday.
Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes urged residents to use the service to make their way to the biggest dawn service in Australian outside Canberra without headaches.
"Anzac Day 2018 marks the end of the Centenary of Anzac and we expect that will attract large numbers to both the Dawn Service and march, so it's very important to plan how to get into the city this year and bear in mind the disruption,” Cr Nelmes said.
"I commend Keolis Downer for putting on the service to ensure the event runs smoothly."
The park and ride will run between the stadium and Queens Wharf every five to 10 minutes between 3.30am and 12.30pm on Anzac Day.
Keolis Downer Hunter general manager Mark Dunlop said there would be minor changes to services during the march on King Street, with buses taking Honeysuckle Drive and Wharf Road between 9am and 1pm.
Ferries from Stockton will run every 15 minutes from 3.30am on the day, while veterans can book free taxis for the march by calling 4940 5955 before 2pm on April 23.
Newcastle’s Chief Inspector Gerard Lawson said crowds that had reached towards 50,000 in past years created significant congestion.
"We anticipate that the loss of Hunter Street as a traffic corridor will further impact congestion and travel times and therefore recommend that people consider using the public transport and Park and Ride options that have been planned to ensure the minimum of delay to their travel,” Chief Inspector Lawson said.
