The Salamander Bay facility usually allows residents to drop their green waste for free on the fourth Sunday of the month, which is this Sunday. But council has announced a second date this month after gardens were battered last weekend.
“Due to the storm last weekend the Salamander Bay Waste Transfer Station will also accept green waste free of charge from residents on the fifth Sunday of April, which is April 29,” the council’s waster coordinator Aaron Molloy said.
As of Monday, the NSW State State Emergency Service confirmed there had been 170 requests for assistance, mostly for hail damage and fallen trees. Readers submitted their photos here.
Mr Malloy said the free drop off was popular among residents and expected the additional service to generate interest.
“Green waste drop off days are a great opportunity for residents to clear up large amounts of green waste from their yards or properties, which is particularly useful after storm events like we saw last weekend,” he said.
The council offers green waste drop-off days across the region on four Sundays each month.
They are:
- Karuah - 1st Sunday of the month year round - on the vacant council land next to The Karuah Centre (9am-2pm)
- Raymond Terrace - (April-September) 2nd Sunday of the month and (October-March) 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month - at the Newline Road Waste Facility (9am-2pm).
- Tilligerry Peninsula - (April-September) 3rd Sunday of the month and (October-March) 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month - at the old Waste Depot at Lemon Tree Passage, Lemon Tree Passage Road. (9am-2pm).
- Tomaree Peninsula - (April-September) 4th Sunday of the month and (October - March) 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month - at the Salamander Bay Waste Transfer Station, 4 Tarrant Road, Salamander Bay (8am-2pm)
- At what location(s) will it take place and between what times?
- The next event for Salamander Bay is this Sunday the 22nd of April from 8am to 2pm.
“For Salamander Bay, Lemon Tree Passage and Raymond Terrace the only restriction is that it is not available to commercial operations,” Mr Malloy said.
“For Karuah there are a couple of additional requirements due to the site restrictions and these are that all pieces of green waste need to be less than 1.8m long and be able to be lifted by two people.”
Mr Malloy reminded residents they could dispose of green waste in two other ways; Residents can put the smaller items into their red bin as the contents of this bin are composted so any garden waste will be recovered within the compost; the other is to book in one of their kerbside bulky waste collections, with each property being able to do this twice each financial year.
