Rugby league identities John Quayle, Les Johns and Ashley Gordon will speak at the dinner being held at Nelson Bay Golf Club on Saturday, May 26.
Quayle joined Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs team in 1968. At the end of the 1972 NSWRFL season he played for Easts as a second-row forward in their grand final loss to Manly-Warringah.
The following season Quayle joined Parramatta and also was selected to play for Sydney then NSW. He was selected to play for Australia in the 1975 Rugby League World Series.
Following his retirement Quayle became the NSWRL’s first general manager and later the ARL’s chief executive officer.
Johns started his career at Newcastle’s Souths club.
He then played nine seasons for the Canterbury-Bankstown club between 1963-1971. Johns played sixteen games for the New South Wales rugby league team between 1962-1969.
He represented Australia on 14 occasions between 1963-1969, first touring with the 1963-64 Kangaroos.
Johns was forced to retire from rugby league in 1971 due to chronic knee injuries.
In 1988 Gordon became the first Aboriginal man to be signed by the Newcastle Knights. In 1990 he won the Dally M Award.
Gordon has coached the Newcastle Indigenous All Stars and junior teams.
The dinner, beginning at 6pm, will cost $60 per person to attend. It includes a two-course meal. There will be a band, raffles and a silent auction on the night.
Registrations for the golf day open at 9am on Sunday, May 27. It is a four person ambrose event open to men, women and mixed teams.
The cost to play is $90 per golfer, which includes a bacon and egg roll at registration, 18 hole golf with a shotgun start at 10am, MOL shirt and cap, golf ball and sausage sizzle.
