A team of 10 Port Stephens surfers took part in the long running Newcastle charity surf competition on Sunday.
The KO Classic was established by the Ugly Brothers Boardriders Club about 15 years ago.
The annual retro surfing event was started in memory of the friends to the club, Darren Kokkin and Louise O'Mara.
“The KO Classic is more than just another surf competition,” Deb Stretton from the Bay Area Boardriders said.
“It’s about grabbing your old single fin or twin board and hit the water all in the name of charity, to give back to give back to the men and woman who have helped build the surfing culture in our region.”
All proceeds raised goes to the Mater Calvary Hospital.
This year, the event raised $20,000. In the past 15 years, more than $120,000 has been raised for the hospital.
It was the Bay Area Brawlers fourth year of competing in the KO Classic. In 2015 the Bay finished third.
All 10 team members surfed in the competition using the one board.
The team included: John Sullivan, Mark Buchanan, Rod Astley, Luke Bartlett, Dave Voyzey, Nelson Corner, Joshua Stretton, Jasmine Sampson, Isaac Sullivan, Darcy Seymour and Max McGraw.
The Bay had some of the youngest competitors in a team including 13 year old Sullivan.
There are 14 teams from across Newcastle, including Merewether, that enter a 10-man team.
“As we are this year’s winner we take on the privilege of running the event in 2019 and are looking for sponsors to get on board to help make the event even bigger,” Stretton said.
“For anyone wishing to get involved or support the event please contact the club.”
