Corrosion of the Robinson Reserve Anna Bay play equipment has prompted Port Stephens Council to act on safety grounds, with removal scheduled within a fortnight.
“During Council's routine playground inspections, staff have found the metal elements of the playground have become corroded and unsafe,” the council’s community and recreation coordinator Brock Lamont said.
“The last thing we want is for someone to get hurt on the old equipment, so council has barricaded the playground and will remove it within the next fortnight. The swing set has been deemed safe and will remain in place until the site is redeveloped.”
The state government announced in March that Robinson Reserve would benefit from a makeover under the Stronger Country Communities Fund.
“Council was recently successful in securing $700,000 to construct a recreational precinct at Robinson Reserve, including a new playground, skate park, Aboriginal Place interpretative signage and supporting park infrastructure,” Mr Lamont said
“Council has also allocated $320,000 to the project, bringing the total investment to over $1 million for the Anna Bay community.”
Construction of the Robinson Reserve recreation area, which forms part of the Birubi Point Aboriginal Place Masterplan, is due to begin in March 2019 pending approvals.

“We understand that it’s a frustrating time for many people, but we’re asking for the community to have patience because the end result will definitely be worth the wait,” Mr Lamont said.
Council staff has begun to work through the concept design and approvals stage of the project. This will include consultation with the Aboriginal Place steering committee and the broader Anna Bay community over the coming months.
“It’s an exciting time for Anna Bay, as Council is eager to deliver a quality beachfront recreational space that highlights the natural and cultural importance of the area,” Mr Lamont said.
“In the meantime, we’re exploring ways to activate the site in spring and summer to ensure that Anna Bay residents and visitors have recreation opportunities until the new precinct is constructed.”
