City lifeguards urged people to avoid water activities, including swimming, surfing and rock fishing.
The Bureau of Meteorology said an easterly-moving low-pressure system in the Tasman Sea and a high-pressure centre over the state’s west had combined to generate vigorous southerly winds and large waves. South-westerly winds are forecast for Newcastle and Port Stephens on Monday and Tuesday.

The temperature is expected to range from 11 degrees to 18 degrees on Monday. Showers are forecast to continue this week.
