“Many people in our community are at risk of developing macular disease but just don’t know it.
“Those over 50 are of higher risk of age-macular degeneration and everyone with diabetes is at risk of developing vision loss from retinopathy,” begins Gavin.
The macula is the name given to the area at the very centre of the retina.
This region is responsible for the detailed central vision and most colour vision.
It is responsible for the ability to read, recognise faces, drive a car, see colours and any other activity that requires fine vision.
While the disease does affect many, Gavin suggests that there are steps people can take to protect themselves.
“Firstly have a regular eye test including a macula check by en eye health professional. Make sure you never ignore changes in your vision.
“Adopt an eye healthy diet which includes lots of green leafy vegetables and oily fish. Finally, modify your lifestyle choices, making sure you get regular exercise and do not smoke,” He explains.
The family pharmacy takes pride in assisting its community to live as healthily as possible and has over the years continued to invest time in its valued customers.
Warwick Bremner was one of the original founders of Medowie Pharmacy in 1982 and was a partner in the business with Gavin and Margaret-Anne Smith until 1987.
After a long and distinguished career in public life, Warwick sold his own pharmacy and went into semi-retirement, later returning to work alongside Gavin again.
Warwick is renowned for his old-fashioned customer-focused approach to community pharmacy and family values, so much so his own family members have joined the close knit team.
“It is an absolute delight to have Warwick back with us where he belongs, not only that but we have been fortunate to have Warwick’s daughter, Nicole, come to work for us at Medowie Pharmacy as well.
“Nicole has worked her whole life in pharmacy and brings a rich depth of experience and expertise with her. She has been a wonderful addition to our caring team at Medowie Pharmacy,” adds Gavin.
These family connections within the pharmacy are strong and reflect the old-fashioned, family-oriented care that all of the team are dedicated to providing.
Medowie Pharmacy is open 7 days, including until 7pm every week night. Hours are Monday to Friday from 8am to 7pm, Saturday from 8am to 2pm and Sunday from 9am until 12 noon.
