Police are investigating after a man with gunshot wounds turned up at a Newcastle hospital overnight.

About 11pm Wednesday a 24-year-old man was dropped at the Mater Hospital in Waratah, suffering gunshot wounds to his hand and shoulder.
Police were contacted; however, are yet to speak to the man due to his medical state. His injuries are not considered life threatening.
Simultaneously, police were called to the intersection of Acacia Avenue and Allowah Street at Waratah West, after reports of gun shots.
Officers from Newcastle Police District established a crime scene, that will undergo forensic examination.
