Every fisho I know has chased a bream at some stage.

In and around Port Stephens we are fortunate to be home to a huge population of this very popular fish.

The oyster racks inside the harbour are supermarkets for bream as they feast on myriad shrimps, shellfish and fingerlings that seek protection in these underwater high rises.

If you intend fishing around the oyster racks be aware that you are adjacent to the oyster growers work place.

Stay clear and do not damage the racks.

Breakwalls, particularly Nelson Bay, are basically artificial reefs that attracts more and more bream each year as the walls age.

Tomaree Torpedo Tube is famous for thumping bream on the top of the tide on a chilly moonless night as is the magnificent Grit Hole on Fingal Island.

My favourite bream are those caught off the beaches. Snowy white, in top condition the winter bream have arrived in excellent numbers on Stockton and Fingal beaches. Fish to 1.8kg are swallowing pipis, worms and mullet strips.

Hit the beach on a rising tide, toss out and hang on!
