The over-40 men’s division packed an exciting punch with competitors locking in an array of high scores for big snaps and carves.
Justin Holland (Kingscliff) and Marty Cole (Avalon) both made their presence felt with both competitors nailing a handful of decent carves and snaps to post heat totals in the 13-point range.
As a result, both surfers have cemented their position into the semi-finals.
Cole backed up the display with an exciting performance in the 10-foot SUP division to claim another opening round heat victory.
Cole joined fellow Northern Beaches surfer Andrew Cassidy (Mona Vale) in the round one winner's circle. Both surfers will make their next appearance in the 10-foot semi-finals.
Kate Cummins (Werri) made the four-plus hour drive north worthwhile taking out her opening over-40 women’s exchange.
Cummins mustered up an impressive 12.67 two-wave heat total to claim the win and lock in a position into the semi-finals.
The Port Stephens Surf Festival comprises of the 2018 ECS Boards SUP State Titles and the 2018 Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles presented by HIF and will decide the NSW teams for the upcoming Australian SUP Titles in Currumbin and the Australian Longboard Titles at Tweed Heads.
