Anna Bay surfer Josh Stretton claimed one of the stand-up paddle board state titles on offer by winning the junior men’s division.
As the surfing component of the SUP State Titles wrapped up at One Mile Beach on Saturday, Stretton, aged 16, and six others were crowned NSW champions.
Stretton posted two mammoth heat totals in the 17.00 point range to gain the upper hand against the opposition and claim the division convincingly.
The win has qualified Stretton for the NSW team that will surf against winners from other states at the Australian titles in Currumbin in November.
Stretton also came runner up in the open men’s 10ft division and second in the technical BOP race for juniors.
The SUP State Titles and NSW Longboard Titles were contested during the six-day surf festival. The final SUP events, the marathon and technical races, were held on Sunday in Salamander Bay.
Mikey Clayton-Brown and Suellen Goyne also flew the flag for Port Stephens. In the longboard titles, Clayton-Brown, aged 15, from Nelson Bay posted a third place in the junior logger.
Goyne, also from the Bay. came runner up behind Mandy Penhall (Mitchells Island) in the over-40 women’s longboard event.
