Look carefully and Daniel Haynes, who took it, says you’ll find three galaxies.
“The arch is our own Milky Way core and we are located out on one of the spiral arms so at certain times of year, like now, we face towards the middle, or core, allowing these fantastic photos to be taken,” he said.
“Then if you look carefully under the arch to the right are two smudgey-looking things – one a bit bigger than the other – these are Large Maganellic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud.”
Yes, celestial photography has become a passion for the Raymond Terrace man.
“I'm a geologist and have always been interested in stars, I did a course in astronomy at university and I have only started doing this kind of photography a few months ago,” he said.
“I love sharing my photographic passion and our backyard – we are truly blessed in Port Stephens.”
