Power, playing in its inaugural Black Diamond AFL women’s competition, outlasted fellow newcomers Wallsend-West Newcastle to win by 16 points.

All eight games were played at Tulkaba Park across two fields on Saturday for the women’s round.

In a low-scoring game, Power and Swans were locked at 14 points apiece at the three-quarter time break.

However, Power dug deep and kicked three goals to one in the final quarter to produce a club and season first win 4.12 (36) to 3.2 (20).

Tia Davidson was the stand-out for the Power, slotting three, while Alice McCloskey continued her recent goalscoring form with a double in defeat.

Power were best served by Davidson, Ash Shearman, Ash Craddock, Cheyenne Neu and Megan MacAuslan.​

Nelson Bay ousted the Newcastle Novas 5.7 (37) to 1.0 (6) under Tulkaba Park’s shining Saturday night lights to remain the only team undefeated this season and secure their place at the top of the table.

The 31-point victory came off defensive strengths from Kate Holland and Hayley West, while Jemma Astley slotted three vital goals despite an early scare with an ankle knock.

Meaghan MacDonald was the lone goalscorer for the Novas, running the centre-field for the defeated side.

Led by great performances across half-back from Kate Holland and Hayley West, the Marlins once again produced a superb defensive effort, only allowing one effective shot on goal by the third-placed Novas.

Apart from Holand and West, Madeline Norton, skipper Sophie Balcombe and Kaitlyn Douglass produced huge games in a tough, stoppage-filled contest played in cold and dewy conditions in Teralba.

Warners Bay made a statement in their quest for finals football, delivering the Newcastle City Stars their first defeat of 2018. The final score was 6.9 (45) to 5.3 (33).

All eyes were on the final quarter of the Bulldogs-Stars clash however, as the Stars moved two points into the lead with a Tayla Braithwaite major.

It wasn’t enough to keep the Blues’ undefeated streak alive however, with Dianne Crep putting the Bulldogs back in the lead before Kirsty Jedrzejak slotted the goal confirming the upset victory.

Warners Bay will also look to Rosanne Holmes’ double early in the contest as crucial, while Emma Foreman and Amy Pittman also scored for the victors.

It was Ashlee Hayllar that got the match started, with two early goals looking like City would be able to get on a roll at the Tulkaba Park, but it wasn’t to be, despite Hayllar adding a third for her hat-trick in the second quarter.

Singleton and host club Lake Macquarie opened the festival of football earlier that morning, with the Roosterettes playing spoiler with a 5.12 (42) to 2.4 (16) victory.

It will be disappointment for the Dockers, who had secured their first handful of wins in recent weeks, but for Singleton the win was vital – the squad had been slipping down the standings and may be on the road to recovery after the 26-point triumph.

Midday saw regional rivals Killarney Vale and Wyong Lakes go head to head in a heated contest, with the Magpies recovering from a seven point deficit at half time to run out 3.5 (23) to 2.3 (15) winners.

Despite holding the lead into the second half, the Bombers couldn’t silence Monique Maddalena’s contribution as she moved into the forwards, kicking one and creating another to secure the eight-point comeback victory.

Bombers skipper Ashleigh Page was best on ground for the defeated side, while Chelsea Dawson and Hannah Page kicked Killarney Vale’s two goals.

Throughout the afternoon Terrigal Avoca scored a 12.13 (85) to 3.3 (21) win over The Entrance Bateau Bay, with Kirstie Hutton, Isabella Stratford and Bronte Korsch all kicking two goals apiece for the Panthers.

Cardiff also kept themselves in the hunt for a top seven position in the afternoon as they charged to a 13.20 (98) to 0.1 (1) win over Muswellbrook.

Faith Lewis was the stand-out scorer for the Hawks with five, while Eloise Petersen and Nicola Breward added doubles to down the Cats.

As the sun began to set over the Tulkaba Park festival, Maitland recorded an 18.11 (119) to 4.1 (25) victory over Gosford, with forwards Sarah Burns and Amy Worth combined for 11 of the team’s 18 goals.

Burns kicked seven, while Worth scored four. Ange Jones scored two for the Tigers.
