On Sunday, the club’s third grade side, playing in the Newcastle men’s competition, came from behind to steal a last second victory from Souths.
Captain Paul Baxter converted a penalty corner to level the score 1-1 and send the game into extra time. After two minutes, leading goal scorer Jono Fletcher found brother Brad Fletcher who scored the golden goal and put the Hornets through to their third consecutive grand-final.
Earlier in the day, Hornets seventh grade team upset minor premiers Crusaders with a 2-1 victory to advance to the decider.
Port led early with a Declan Forsyth goal, but in the second half Crusaders scored against the run of play to draw level.
The Hornets though responded almost immediately with veteran Col Anderson deflecting home the winner 10 minutes from time.
A tense final few moments resulted as Crusaders looked to equalise but the Hornets held firm.
Fourth grade bowed out 3-1 to West in their minor semi-final.
The men will play their final games at Newcastle International Hockey Centre on September 16.
The Hornets A-grade women’s team, playing in the Maitland Hockey Association, have also advanced to the grand-final.
They will face Bluebees at Maitland Park on September 8 from 2.30pm.
