There was a sense of déjà vu on the King of the Box winners podium at the weekend with Nic Squires and Josh Stretton claiming back-to-back division honours.
For a second consecutive year Squires, from the South Coast, won the open men’s shortboard while Stretton, from Anna Bay, took out the junior men’s event in the popular one day surfing competition held at Box Beach in Shoal Bay on September 1.
Corlette surfer Elle Clayton-Brown went one better than last year and took out the open women’s shortboard. Port surfer Simon Hasson won the legends division.
“The waves were a bit small – we missed the big swell by one day – but there were some super fun waves in there,” organiser and competitor Teza Mckenna said. “It was a beautiful day and another great success.”
Runner up to Squires in the open men’s division was Ryan Slattery from the Central Coast followed by Sandon Whittaker (Central Coast) and Jordan Liackman (Swansea).
In the open women, Merewether surfers Amelie Burke, Madi Poole and Ellie Lambkin placed second, third and fourth..
Jordy Turansky (Northern Beaches) was runner up to Stretton in juniors, followed by Mannix Greentree-Squires (Scarbrough) and Ben Hucker (Central Coast).
Legends was dominated by Port surfers. Runner up to Hasson was Luke Michalak followed by Dean Shaw and Rod Astley.
