The man was lucky to survive after the vehicle, travelling at 80 kilometres an hour, hit a median barrier and flipped. The accident occurred about 4.30pm at the intersection of Old Punt Road.
Three ambulance crews were called to the scene, along with the rescue unit from Port Stephens SES.
Emergency services worked together to carefully extricate the 52-year-old man from the vehicle.
The incident shut one lane of the Pacific Highway and rescue crews were forced to work in a ‘confined space’ in order to cut the man free while keeping traffic moving.
“This is where the new 40 kilometre speed limit is designed to protect emergency workers,” an SES spokesman said.
“When you are concentrating working, so close to traffic, it is good to know that people will be slowing down keeping us safe.”
The driver was semi-conscious when he was freed from the car. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
He suffered chest and abdominal injuries.
