A penalty shootout was required to decide the game between the Hornets and Norths in the Newcastle Men’s Hockey third grade grand-final at Broadmeadow on Sunday.
At the end of two periods of extra time the scores remained 0-0, forcing it to a best of five shootout. It went one-for-one until Norths stumbled on the fourth shot.
The Hornets players held their nerve to score from the spot each time. Goalkeeper Jeremy Miller saved a final Norths attempt to clinch the 2018 title for the Hornets.
“For the club, it was a very rewarding outcome,” Hornets life member Scott Rainbow said. “The match featured seven juniors from the Nelson Bay competition.
“Jono Fletcher, Liam Fletcher, Brad Fletcher, Lucas McLeod, Jamie Whatman and Flynn Thompson had starring roles in the win. Josh Bruton featured for Norths.
“The quality from these youngsters was superb. The team will now move into second grade next season confident of being competitive with a core group of youngsters.”
Earlier in the day, the men’s seventh grade team were unable to defeat minor premiers Crusaders, going down 3-0. Two Bay juniors, Declan Forsyth and Nick Churchill, featured in the squad and had outstanding matches, Rainbow said.
Meanwhile, the club’s A-grade women’s team playing in the Maitland competition also won their grand-final. The Hornets women defeated Bluebees 2-0. Caity Ping and Bev Rose were the goal scorers.
