Cr Smith was elected to the role at Tuesday’s council meeting, replacing fellow central ward councillor Chris Doohan who held the deputy role since 2015.
The newly elected deputy mayor said she is excited to take on the new council role.
“Having been newly elected to council last year, I am honoured to be elected as deputy mayor in 2018,” she said.
“I am passionate about Port Stephens and seeing the best outcomes for our residents now and into the future.
“When I first stood for election I pledged to make a real difference for our community. It’s been a whirlwind year and I’m proud to be a part of this council, which has already achieved a great deal.
“I’ve relished the great learning experience I’ve had thus far, and now as deputy mayor, I look forward to learning even more, continuing to work in partnership with our community and contributing even more to our Port Stephens.”
Cr Smith will remain in the role for one year, effective from now.
