Roads and Maritime Services said that the clean-up continues from the 81 containers lost or damaged from the YM Efficiency, with the latest recovery centred around Fingal Head.
“The ongoing monitoring and reactive response capability will continue for another 12 months,” RMS said.
“All costs associated with the clean up of containers and their contents will be covered by the ship’s insurers.”
It was originally believed that the container vessel, YM Efficiency, lost 83 containers overboard, but this was later revised that it had lost 81. About 30 additional containers were damaged, but remained on board.
At the time, the ship was offshore from the Central Coast of NSW.
The number and variety of items that spilled into the sea ranged from nappies, noodles and yoga mats to garden furniture and emu oil. Many items washed up on the Port’s beaches and islands.
“The heaviest concentration of debris has been located around Port Stephens, with varying amounts located from Stockton Beach to Seal Rocks,” the RMS said.
RMS continues to coordinate the clean up effort, along with Varley Group, the contractor appointed by the ship’s insurers.
