Dropping his line into 145 metres of water with a live slimy mackerel dancing on the end Laurie was ambushed by a thumping bar cod.
These incredible deep-water fish, which have been reported to a depth of 370 metres, can grow to a length of 1.6 metres and weigh a solid 45 kilograms.
Bar cod are an excellent eating fish, so I expect many barbecues at the Chadders.
“How much did the fish weigh?” I asked Laurie.
“Heavy,” came the reply.
Inside the port
Back inside the Port, the luderick have been busy downing floats right along the Nelson Bay breakwall.

Summer whiting are moving onto our beaches from Stockton to Fingal. Worms are the number one bait on a Number four long shank hook. Big tailor are cruising around Fingal Island and are keen to attack any lure or slowly retrieved pilchard on ganged hooks. Fingal champ Rodd Owen has been feasting on smoked tailor, which is very hard to beat.
