To coincide with World Wombat Day on Monday, Oakvale donated the funds from its Save Our Wildlife program and for the next month have pledged to champion the Hunter-based wombat rescue group.
“Throughout the rest of October and until the end of November we’ll be encouraging people to jump on the Cedar Creek Wombat Rescue website and to donate,” Oakvale Wildlife Park’s curator Lachlan Gordon said.
“Roz and Kev Holme have been involved with wombat rescue and rehabilitation for more than 20 years, often dedicating their own resources to do it.
“We want to help raise funds for Cedar Creek and help them continue their fight to save the wombat from extinction.”
Oakvale is home to one female bare-nosed, or common, wombat named Pebbles.
In Australia, three species of wombat – the northern hairy-nosed, southern hairy-nosed and the bare-nosed – are heading towards being endangered.
“Because of this it’s really important to support the organisations that are trying to save these animals in the wild,” Mr Gordon said.
To date, Oakvale has donated $8500 to conservation groups from its Save Our Wildlife program.
