Joyce celebrated with around 50 of her closest friends and family – including niece and Port Stephens councillor Jaimie Abbott – at her 100th birthday bash at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club on November 18.
Born in Karuah, Joyce moved to Raymond Terrace at the age of 22 after she met her husband (now passed) Keith Wood who was a breadmaker. The couple have two children Julie and Sandra.
Joyce, the great aunt of Cr Abbott, was a prolific bowls and tennis player in the Raymond Terrace area.
“The secret to living a long life is to not spend too long on your bum,” she said.
“I’ve always ensured I’ve surrounded myself with good friends and family. I had a good loving husband and lots of love in my life.
“It’s always been important to me to stay active and bowls was a big part of my life for over 40 years which kept my mind and body active, it was a great social network.”
