Fran Corner, president of Tilligerry Landcare Group, returned home from the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW awards presentation held in Orange on November 10 with two wins and three highly commended certificates.
“I think we had some good projects, which is why they were recognised,” Mr Corner said.
“These awards are run by Keep Australia Beautiful and you can’t argue with that. We need to keep Australia, our communities beautiful, healthy and try and make them sustainable.
“It’s really the community that wins with awards, because they acknowledge the projects that benefit them.”
The Tilligerry Peninsula was the winner of the Overall Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Award for population category C (6001-12,000 people).
The Tanilba Bay foreshore footpath project won the Community Spirit and Inclusion Award, also for population category C.
Ms Corner came away with highly commended certificates in the Habitat and Wildlife Conservation Award category for koala planning and tree planting, the Heritage and Culture Award category for the Tanilba Bay walk project and the Young Legends Environmental Achievement Award in population category A (up to 2000 people).
Tanilba Bay teenager Belle Niki has been volunteering with Ms Corner for Clean Up Australia Day for the past five years, which is why she was nominated for the young legends award.
“For me, I like to see the town clean and I like looking after the environment,” the 15 year old said, adding that she was proud to take out highly commended in the award.
Ms Corner said she would like to see more youths like Belle join environmental projects on the peninsula.
The tidy towns assessor visited the Tilligerry Peninsula on what could have been one of the worst times of the year – the day after the August bushfire.
Ms Corner said the assessor was among the traffic that crawled into the peninsula once Lemon Tree Passage Road reopened after the fire threat subsided.
“He looked at all our projects, and spoke with Belle. We did quite well in the end,” Ms Corner said.
