Jim and Lois Morrison are both aged 75 years, have worked hard all their lives, paid their taxes and rates, and since moving to the Port 28 years ago have done more than their fair share of volunteering.
The couple dedicated years to the country musical and Tastes at the Bay festivals, and more recently have volunteered their time at Harbourside Haven and Tomaree Accommodation Service.
“As pensioners we have had to tighten our belts but we know there are others out there who are really struggling financially but are reluctant to come forward. Some of the pensioners we have spoken to say they fear being branded whingers or out of touch if they object,” Mr Morrison said.
“The current aged pension for couples is around $690 each a fortnight, and with the rising costs of power, fuel and insurance added to a rise in rates hits hard.”
Mr Morrison said that many pensioners were confused about the concessions on offer by the council.
A council spokesperson said that the situation currently for ratepayers holding a Commonwealth Pension Card is they receive a $250 discount on their rates.
“[As part of the SRV] we will introduce a lower domestic waste service charge for pensioners, which will see incremental reductions to the annual charge so by the end of year seven, pensioners will receive a $228 reduction to their waste charge.”
Residents wanting to learn more about whether they are eligible for concessions, can call the customer service team on (02) 4988 0255.
Mr Morrison said he has attended and spoke out at three SRV community meetings, highlighting the plight of pensioners.
“At each of these meetings I have had pensioners come up to me afterwards thanking me for taking up their cause,” he said. “One woman told me she can only afford to eat two meals a day. I have personally seen the disrespect shown to pensioners.”
