Tomaree Business Chamber member Peter Clough said that Christmas festive lights had been installed on the Stockton Street stage and that Port Stephens Council would erect laser lighting in nearby Apex Park.
“The Stockton Street lighting is a Nelson Bay Civic Pride group initiative and it is hoped these lights will remain their indefinitely. The lights have significantly lifted the festive atmosphere in the tourist town and hopefully will enhance the night time economy,” Mr Clough said.
“It is also hoped that the decorations will attract more diners and boutique browsers.”
The Civic Pride group, a joint initiative of the chamber and Nelson Bay NOW, continues to attract volunteers who venture into the town to water and weed gardens in support of those Nelson Bay businesses that have adopted a garden.
“In fact, even community members have adopted gardens and are now maintaining them. The volunteers have been a fantastic asset for the Nelson Bay town centre and businesses appreciate their efforts,” Mr Clough said.
“Some businesses have introduced new decorative elements on the footpaths in front of their premises while others are upgrading their awnings and facades.
“There is a real push to build on what the Civic Pride group has achieved following the huge working bee last May, which was a joint council-community effort.”
Civic Pride member Rory Milne said that there were signs the Stockton Street stage would become a focal point for light entertainment this holiday season.
“Hopefully this will attract more families into town,” he said.
“It is gearing up to be another bumper season for visitors and it is hoped that the recently completed Yacaaba Street bypass will ease traffic congestion in the CBD.
“It is also hoped that the new carpark at the former Caltex site will provide further traffic relief.”
Mr Clough said that Civic Pride would welcome any financial support in order to introduce more lighting.
