The panel, comprising 17 randomly selected members of the business and resident community, was commissioned by Port Stephens Council and facilitated by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
The panelists met over two sessions in November to consider the perceptions, challenges and opportunities for car parking in the CBD.
Bay businessman Heath Jones said that he was initially skeptical of the concept, but had changed his mind after taking part in the discussions.
“Originally, I thought what could a diverse mix of community and business minded people offer to more experienced engineers and planners,” Mr Jones said.
“But during the meetings everyone was given ample opportunity to have their say and we had some great ideas, like the use of technology in monoriting parking times with number plate scanners. My hope now is that the recommendations will be acted upon when presented to the council.”
A council spokesperson said that the council’s role in the citizens panel was to provide information, answer questions when needed, and to observe.
“A report is being prepared by UTS to reflect the comments made during the panel, including recommendations for actions intended to improve car parking, which will be considered in policies and decision making in the preparation of the Nelson Bay public domain and capital works plans.”
