Nelson Bay Rotary president Kathy Rimmer, who along with husband and business partner Josh Rimmer took out the Examiner’s overall Business of the Year Award in October, was selected by Port Stephens Council to be the ambassador for Australia Day, which in 2019 has a theme of ‘everyone, every story’ and will put a strong focus on celebrating the area’s individuality and community.
“I was delighted to get the call. It’s definitely a great honour,” Mrs Rimmer said. “This area is very much about locals supporting locals. It is very community minded.
“There’s so many people in the area that work behind the scenes. Australia Day is a chance for the community to recognise those people.”
Australia Day festivities including food, fireworks, markets and live music will be held in Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay, Lemon Tree Passage and Karuah on Saturday, January 26.
Australia Day 2018:
Port Stephens Council is partnering with Raymond Terrace Rotary Club to host a family fun day at Riverside Park.
Festivities will start at 8am with a free barbecue breakfast supported again this year by Raymond Terrace Bowling Club and cooked by the town’s Rotary and Lions clubs.
Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer will preside over the official ceremony at 9am.
The ceremony includes the presentation of the Port Stephens Annual Awards – Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Freeman of Port Stephens, Sportsperson of the Year, Cultural Endeavour and the Port Stephens Medal.
Mrs Rimmer will deliver the Australia Day address in Raymond Terrace and later at Nelson Bay.
Cr Palmer said there will be something for everyone at the Port’s Australia Day events.
“Australia Day is a time to reflect on how lucky we to call Port Stephens home and to celebrate all of the people that make this such a fantastic place to live,” he said.
“I’s the perfect way to spend a summer day out with the family. Best of all, most activities are free so it’s affordable for all to enjoy.”
Australia Day celebrations will be held at:
- Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace, from 8am to 2.30pm
- Henderson Park, Lemon Tree Passage, 8am to 12.30pm
- Fly Point Park, Nelson Bay, 9am to 4pm
