Code Camp’s summer school holiday program, which is open to children aged 7 to 12, teaches attendees how to code and build their own apps.
“Digital technologies are now a compulsory part of the national school curriculum, so schools are having to adopt new programs related to coding into their lesson plans,” Code Camp's chief technology officer, Dan Zwolenski, said.
“There has been a big surge in teachers taking our professional development courses so that they’re equipped to teach these new subjects to students.”
Code Camp was founded in 2013 by Mr Zwolenski, Hayley Markham, Ben Levi and Peter Neill.
Eight children attended the first camp. Now, Code Camp attracts 35,000 participants across 200 schools in Australia and is expecting 5000 enrolments these school holidays.
“We have seen an increase in the number of enrolments in our camps as parents are beginning to realise that coding is an important skill to equip their children with to provide them with more opportunities in the future,” Ms Markham, Code Camp chief operating officer and a mum of three, said.
The three-day Code Camp will be held at Medowie Christian School from January 16.
During the camp children will learn to code, create an app, have access to a range of video tutorials so they can continue coding at home and will receive a Code Camp shirt and hat.
After the camp students will have their own app to show family and friends and will be able to access Code Camp World – the platform they used to create the app so that they can further their coding skills at home.
The three day camp will cost $340 per child to attend. However, parents looking to sign their children up are eligible for the NSW Government’s new $100 Creative Kids Rebate.
The rebate, launched through Service NSW on January 1, is similar to the Active Kids voucher and can be put towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition fees for creative and cultural activities such as music lessons, language classes, coding and digital, visual and performing arts.
