The Tilligerry Lions Club, which has been behind the celebrations for the past 15 years, is anticipating between 400 and 450 people will turn out to Henderson Park for the day.

“This is something for the community, an opportunity to come out, celebrate our history, recognise our uniqueness and quality of life – and where better to do that than the waterfront of Lemon Tree Passage?” Lions club member Kevin Colman said.

“This gives locals an opportunity to enjoy the day out with their community, to celebrate our history together.

“If we didn’t hold anything here, everyone would have to go to Raymond Terrace or Nelson Bay, which is pretty far. This is our own community celebration.”

As has become tradition, the Lions club’s big breakfast will kick off Saturday’s proceedings at 8am.

Worimi elder uncle John Ridgeway will perform the welcome to country about 8.30am. 

Country rock bands Mustang and Gasolene are due to perform on the park’s stage up until 10am when Australian Army Band Newcastle takes over for a special hour-and-a-half long performance.

The Army band performance will include the the pipes and drum section.

While music is playing on stage, a range of activities will be available for children to get involved in such as face painting and jumping castles.

Tilligerry Auto Club members will also be displaying their classic vehicles in the park.

To support those who like to go all out and dress up in Australia Day attire for the community event, this year the Lions club is running best dressed competition.

Prizes are on offer for the best dressed man, woman, girl, boy and pet.

“Like fashions on the field but for uniquely Australian attire,” Mr Colman said.

The day’s activities will wrap up about 1pm.

Tilligerry Lions Club’s Australia Day celebration, which grow in popularity each year, is supported by Port Stephens Council.
