Hundreds of hungry and curious people turned out to the first social in Fly Point Park, Nelson Bay on Saturday, January 12 and even more to the Boyd Oval, Medowie event the following Saturday.
The next Street Food Socials, organised and run by the team behind the popular Sacred Tree Markets, will be held in Fly Point Park on Sunday, January 27 and in Anna Bay following the Surfest wildcard trials on Saturday, February 2.
“These Street Food Socials are about giving the community something new,” Sacred Tree Markets founder Jessica Rowarth said.
“We’ll bring a bunch of trucks to the one spot for the community to come together, enjoy some food, some entertainment. It’s a real family friendly vibe.”
Ms Rowarth said the increasing popularity and demand for food vans at the Nelson Bay foreshore markets prompted her team to create an all new family friendly event.
About seven trucks offering a variety of food are available at the socials, which begin at 4pm and run until 9pm.
In addition to food, the Street Food Social offers live music. Ms Rowarth said the idea was for families to head along to the park, grab some food, sit down and eat and listen to music.
Musicians Mitch King and James Bennett are lined up to perform in Nelson Bay on Sunday. At 7.45pm there will be a fire show by Hannah Indigo.
The Anna Bay social will be staged in Robinson Reserve. This will follow the Surfest trails at Birubi Beach, which run from 7am.
Ms Rowarth said she would look to continue and expand the Street Food Social offering later in the year.
The markets have approval to expand into Raymond Terrace.
“The first four will be a trial to see how they go. This is our first time running a street food event. We’ll see how the trial period goes but we’re keen to expand into more communities,” Ms Rowarth said.
